Today we had a sub and watched a good chunk of Hotel Rwanda. You should have answered the questions about the movie. If absent, be sure you watch the movie and answer the corresponding questions. *If you consider the graphic nature of the film objectionable, please make the paper-fold explained on page 523 of the textbook.

3/29/11

Today we graded our Europe tests and began our unit on Africa. We discussed colonization and the Berlin Conference of 1884 then talked about how to summarize and cite sources. We practiced citing and then worked on summarizing data in the form of a map.

Homework: Due Monday because I will be absent on Thursday. Be sure to finish summarizing the maps and answering the questions.

3/16/11 and 3/21/11

On Thursday we learned ALL about Russia and communism, taking notes during the lecture. (If absent, see the Russia powerpoint).

On Monday, the 21st:
We got the 4th term off to a good start today! Today we:
  • Learned about the conflict in Libya
  • Reviewed communism and discussed major events in Russian history from last time
  • Discussed Balkanization and the Serbo-Croation War
  • Watched 30 for 30 clip of "Once Brothers" (Find this on youtube if you were absent)

On Friday, there was a substitute. You should have completed "Regional notes" about Northern, Western, Southern, and Eastern Europe, then summarized the things you learned in "The Important Book" (you'll need to get this from the classroom in order to complete it...the region notes can be found on the blog).

Today (Tuesday) we reviewed some of the main ideas in Europe in the form of a timeline (Greek&Roman Empires, Reformation, Industrial Revolution, WWI, WWII, Cold War, Fall of the Berlin Wall), then we put together a giant map of Europe. We learned how to synthesize data and added the information we learned about GDP, HDI, and internet use to our giant map. We began discussing the European Union and will finish our worksheet next time in class.

1st and 3rd period homework: Complete your Culture Projects! (2-3 pages about visiting a cultural event or interviewing someone from another culture)

The end of the term is Friday!

Today we finished learning about the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and Indonesia and then presented on themes and current events (well done everyone...we had some tasty treats!)
We also learned about Carnaval in Rio de Janiero, Brazil and even learned a little samba! Don't forget to complete your study guide for next time and study for the test!

Today we:
-learned about Latin American specifics and took notes from the powerpoint
-discussed natural disasters
-began the case study (Venn diagram) comparing the natural disasters in Haiti, Chile, and Indonesia.
